Outstanding Schools with Environmental EmphasisStowe Elementary School is an example of a classroom interested in the environment.
School Projects and ActivitiesAdopt a Watershed uses a local watershed as a living laboratory in which students engage in hands-on activities, making science applicable and relevant to their lives. Berit's Best Environmental Sites for Children Librarian selected, rated, annotated links to environmental education sites for kids. Classroom Feeder Watch Gives students a background in bird biology, bird behavior, and data analysis; fosters interest in science and nurtures scientific thinking; uses the latest advances in computer technology; uses writing and art to display students' research; and incorporates the National Science Education Standards. Energy Quest A colorful and exciting site for kids filled with stories and games related to energy. Resources for parents and teachers on all types of energy used in California. Consumer Energy Center Everything there is to know about energy efficiency for the home or business, information about alternative fuel vehicles and buying an energy efficient vehicle, and information about renewable energy. Environmentality Challenge All 5th grade classes are invited to compete in Disney's partnership with CDE to incorporate environmentality-thinking at school, at home, and in the community. Classes may win great rewards. EPA Kids' Web Page The Kids' page is designed for children ages 5-12 and contains information on air, water, recycling, plants and animals, and general environmental education. It also provides art and games on various environmental issues that can be downloaded. EPA Students' Web Page Students' Web page is designed for students age 12 and older and offers more advanced environmental information. It also provides opportunities to participate in various environmental programs, information on awards, competitions and environmental careers and research activities. EPA Teachers' Web Page The Teachers' Web Page provides students and teachers with current, accurate, and reliable environmental information. The page will provide teachers with information on environmental issues and grant information, as well as facts from the EPA Library and direct-link page to other environmental Web sites. KidMAX for California's Schools Providing a free source of used materials to California's schools, during these times of limited resources. Free or inexpensive materials. Curriculum Resources and LibrariesOffice of Environmental Education is part of the California Department of Education, and has done a great service by evaluating the many resources available. A great deal of material exists on all aspects of environmental education, but many fail to meet high standards. Benefit from years of work evaluating thousands of curricula. Their Compendia Project is a powerhouse in evaluating EE curriculum. Soon you will be able to search the compendia on our Searchable Database to get exactly the lessons you need! The California Environmental Resources Evaluation System - CERES An incredible library of information! Developed by the California Resources Agency to facilitate access to a variety of electronic data describing California's rich and diverse environments. The goal of CERES is to improve environmental analysis and planning by integrating natural and cultural resource information from multiple contributors and making it available and useful to a wide variety of users. California Department of EducationThe best place to get the latest copy of California Standards. Classroom Earth.orgThis new website will help educators, after-school providers and home-schooling parents to get started or improve their skills in environmental education. It provides up-to-date information on the most successful, well-tested and effective national enfironmental education programs available today. The pages on each program contain a clear description, audience/grade level, overview of content and topics, materials, educator feedback, awards and recognition, and fast steps for obtaining and implementing the program. The site also has an Additional Resources section that includes a Best-of-the-Web listing or portal sites for environmental education and a special list of free environmental education programs offered by the national environmental resource agencies. Earthcare This new online resource features stories about conservation and earth stewardship, global climate change, ecosystems, and biodiversity. Many Earthcare topics are linked to Project Learning Tree (PLT) curricula, which meet state and national standards. Stories that correlate to PLT activities are identified by the PLT logo, which enables teachers to easily research and select topics for classroom activities and homework. Environmental ResourcesA library of internet resources relating to biodiversity, ecology, earth sciences, energy, environmental law, forestry, meteorology, oceanography, sustainable development and more! Exploring the Environment, Part of NASA's Classroom for the Future Exploring the Environment provides tools to help teachers make students more environmentally aware and to acquire the values and attitudes necessary for sustainable development. Modules encourage collaborative groups of students to conduct research in environmental areas and to generate products which demonstrate understanding. (Grades 6-12.) Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an environmental education program for educators working with students in preK-12th grade. PLT helps students gain awareness and knowledge of the natural and built environment, their place within it, and their responsibility for it. Project WILD The Project WILD Program is a nationwide environmental education program. Facilitators conduct teacher workshops and training materials to be used with students in grades K-12. There are over 800 workshop facilitators and over 39,000 teachers who have attended a Project WILD workshop in California. Water Education The best source of water education information and the home of Project Wet. World Wildlife Fund/Education at WWF WWF works to promote an understanding of the web of life and what people everywhere can do to help protect it. Programs in environmental education and comunity outreach routinely offer special events for the public, workshops and trainings for educators, online activities, traveling exhibits, and resources for students and educators. Some of the programs are: Windows on the Wild (WOW) which offers biodiversity information, educational resources, and activities; Pennies for the Planet an annual kids campaign that connects classrooms with conservation and environmental action; Biodiversity 911: Saving Life on Earth a lively traveling exhibit with a companion web site.
Environmental OrganizationsNorth American Association of Environmental Education (NAAEE) is a network of professionals and students working in the field of environmental education throughout North America and 55 other countries around the world. Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (AEOE) is a network of naturalists and environmental educators in California. They meet twice each year. Among other items, their website is a good place to locate environmental teaching positions.
Government Agencies dealing with the Environment Here are websites of other federal government agencies that will serve as starting points Bureau of Land Management Environmental Education An outstanding site providing a pile of educational resources for teachers. Recognizing these achievements, the Nation must make further progress. Energy Education Resources for Parents and Teachers provides information about the California Energy Commission's Energy Quest web site and links to a variety of other environmental education web sites and publications. Environmental Council of the States A non-profit association of state and territorial environmental commissioners, this Web site provides information on state partnerships with the Environmental Protection Agency and includes links to Web sites operated by state environmental agencies. Environmental Protection Agency - EPA Very active site full of helpful information for teachers and students. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Forecasts the nation's weather and issues warnings of impending severe weather and flooding, protects endangered ocean species, and conducts environmental research.
