Update
Draft Curriculum Units Now Posted for Review
The EEI Team is developing over 150 curriculum units for grades K-12 in the areas of Science, History/Social Science, and English/Language Arts. As units become available, they will be posted for a 30 day review period.

Are you interested in becoming a writer for the EEI Curriculum?
Field Testing of the EEI Curriculum Now Occurring
Teachers in 19 school districts throughout California have begun field testing the EEI curriculum. After teaching each unit, the teacher submits an evaluation to the EEI team that includes suggestions for improving the unit. Environmental Youth Experience Reunion---May 31, 2008

What a wonderful day we all had!  The Wildlands Conservancy Whitewater Preserve was perfect...mild temperature, a cool breeze, lots of beautiful sheer slopes and mountains, pools of clear blue water, a hike down the creekbed and people enjoying the outdoors together.  Teams came from Banning, Palm Springs, and Moreno Valley and showed how they have been making a difference in their communities for the environment.

Each participating team received a certificate mounted in a recycle computer circuit board and a copy of Last Child in the Woods.  Lunch was served in the open and enjoyed by everyone present.

Plans are being made for a bigger and better Environmental Youth Leadership Conference for the school year 2008-2009.  Three sites have been chosen for the Fall.  The theme will be Water and Energy Environmental topics.  There is funding for you to participate.  So, check out the button to the left Funding Opportunities.

HESPERIA USD SCHOOLS RECOGNIZED FOR SAVING $660,000

THROUGH ENERGY EFFICIENCY.    AMAZING!!!!!

Students from Sultana and Desert Trails High Schools in Hesperia were recently honored for "thinking and acting green" by the Alliance to Save Energy. Through the Alliance's Green Schools Program, students, faculty and staff lowered energy costs in the Hesperia Unified School District by more than $660,000 over a five-year period. In addition to saving the district money, the participating schools' energy savings reduced the district's CO2 emissions by approximately 4,400,000 lbs! The district also returned half the savings - some $330,000 - to the schools for further energy-efficiency activities and educational materials, such as textbooks and computers. Mark Ziesmer and Barbara Ward Lawe, Green Schools Advisors for Sultana and Desert Trails, respectively, are both past MEEC Teachers of the Year and have both taught at MEEC's annual Youth Environmental Leadership Confererences. MEEC congratulates Mr. Ziesmer and Ms. Ward Lawe for their ongoing stellar GREEN achievements!

                                          No Child Left Inside:

Congressman John Sarbanes of Maryland and Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island recently introduced legislation that strengthens and expands environmental education in America's classrooms and reconnects children with nature. These bills, each titled the No Child Left Inside Act of 2007, were introduced in the House (H.R.3036) and the Senate (S.1981).

The No Child Left Inside Act of 2007 amends the NCLB law in the following ways:

§        Provides federal funding to states to train teachers in environmental education and to
operate model environmental education programs, which include outdoor learning.

§        Provides funding to states that create environmental literacy plans to ensure that high school graduates are environmentally literate.

§        Provides funding through an environmental education grant program to build state and national capacity.

§        Re-establishes the Office of Environmental Education within the U.S. Department of Education.
