Mojave Desert Area

The mission of the Mojave Environmental Education Consortium (MEEC) is to improve the environmental literacy of students, teachers and the community of the Mojave Desert region by actively providing quality educational resources.  MEEC was founded in 2001 and is the High Desert zone of the California Regional Environmental Education Community (CREEC) Network, a project of the California Department of Education.

MEEC’s boundaries consist of the High Desert portion of San Bernardino County, the Palo Verde Valley of Riverside County and the High Desert region of North Los Angeles County, including the cities of Lancaster and Palmdale.

MEEC provides a variety of services and programs to educators, including:

  • an environmental resource library in both the Victor Valley and Antelope Vally, where teachers can check out standards-based classroom materials;
  • “Enviro Bus Buck” transportation grants, which fund school field trips to environmentally relevant sites;
  • at least four environmental teacher workshops a year;
  • an annual MEEC Teacher and Student of the Year awards program;
  • five environmental essay contests per year;
  • an annual scholarship competition for teachers to attend the Keystone Center,
  • a national teacher training  institute located in Colorado;
  • an annual Youth Environmental Leadership Conference;
  • participation in local science fairs to select winners of  the “Outstanding Environmental Science Project” Award;
  • a High School Environmental Science Scholarship for up to five graduating high school seniors;
  • a quarterly newsletter for educators;
  • assistance locating providers/resources on almost any environmental education topic through our Speakers/Mentors Bureau, which provides classroom speakers, job shadow hosts and senior project mentors; and

  • the Piute Ponds Desert Lab Project, under which standards-based watershed curriculum and an educational website are being developed by student teachers, using the Edwards Air Force Base wetlands as the learning centerpiece.

MEEC is headquartered at the Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District in Victorville, the organization’s lead/founding agency.  MEEC’s programs are 100% funded through sponsorships of different levels provided by 40-plus businesses and agencies.  MEEC was granted its 501(C) (3) status in 2006.
