Kathy has had a strong interest and dedication to the environment since she can remember.  She grew up in San Diego, went to the University of California at Davis, the University of Montana in Missoula, and California State University at San Bernardino.  She received a B.S. and teaching credential in Montana and finished her M.A. in Environmental Education at Cal State.  Kathy is married to husband Ben and has two grown children, Lucas and Darcy.  Kathy has taught life, earth, and physical science, generously sprinkled with EE, for twenty years until her retirement in June, 2006.  She also has been actively involved in the Cal State Environmental EXPO, curriculum writing, Inland Science and Engineering Fair, and several other academic projects.  Kathy has found her retirement was timed just right by the opening of the CREEC Coordinator position in RIMS.  Now she plans to devoted her time to the promotion and implementation of Environmental Education and Literacy throughout Region 10.

Being one of those rather rare “born and raised in Southern California people”, I have had the wonderful pleasure of living on the beach, the mountains, cities, and now the High Desert.  I have been committed to protecting our natural resources from a young age, and have always been a passionate animal lover, bringing home every injured animal I found and nursing it back to health.  I have a 4,000 square foot Desert Tortoise Preserve on my 10-acre ranch, as well as assorted domestic animals and wildlife creatures that visit the habitats that I have established for them.  I have traveled to all 50 states, Canada from coast-to-coast and as far south in Mexico as the Honduras border, climbing and exploring Mayan ruins.  Camping continues to be a great love of mine, and I frequent the High Sierras wilderness areas whenever time allows.
Previous to being selected as the MEEC Program Specialist, I was the Public Relations and Education Coordinator for the Mojave Resource Conservation District.  That position made it possible for me to share my love of plants, nature, animals, and most importantly, conservation of natural resources, with students and the public.  I was able to continue my knowledge by receiving my Master Gardener Certification and Project WET Facilitator Certification to better serve the educators and homeowners in the surrounding desert communities.  In 2004-2005, I co-developed and implemented the High Desert Storm Water Awareness Program, which demonstrated how our everyday actions can pollute our groundwater.  This program also included an ROP Automotive Recycling Program and both were presented to students in the Victor Valley and Antelope Valley areas.  I became aware of the tremendous environmental resources and learning opportunities MEEC had to offer educators and students when I was asked to present a Project WET Workshop to educators at Edward’s Air Force Base in 2006, and again as a Water Conservation presenter at the 2007 MEEC Youth Environmental Leadership Conference.
So it is with great pleasure that I have been selected to be a part of this wonderful program.  I look forward to working with others that care and understand the importance of protecting and conserving our fragile environment and natural resources.  MEEC presents the perfect opportunity to help our young people become educated and responsible stewards of this wonderful planet.

Coordinator - Coachella Valley
Jennifer Futterman
Phone:(760) 799-7106

Jen grew up in Palo Alto, earned her BA in Environmental Studies at UC Santa Cruz, worked as a Girl Scout Leader of six troops in inner city Oakland from 1995-1998 and moved to the desert in 2000 with her daughter Sky. She loved working for the Palm Springs Desert Museum for two years, bringing lessons about desert ecology into the public schools and leading interpretive nature hikes for adults. Jen is in the midst of getting her teaching credential at the Palm Desert Campus of CSUSB and will finish the program by December of 2005. Jen finds much of her inspiration in the natural world and continually seeks creative new ways of using gardening, nature journaling, music, dance, visual art, multimedia and computer technology to bring about environmental literacy. The study of classical Ashtanga (eight-limbed) Yoga as a way of life will be her life-long practice. Currently, Jen is enjoying the pleasure of teaching three Yoga classes at the Urban Yoga Center in Palm Springs.
