HUNTINGTON LIBRARY: GROUNDING IN BOTANY

HUNTINGTON:

Imagine your wish list for a high school science lesson: Inexpensive materials. Standards-based. Engaging. Hands-on. With "Grounding in Botany: Integrating Plants into the High School Science Classroom," a professional development course offered at the Huntington Botanical Gardens, we show you how using plants in the classroom can make these wishes come true.

Applications for "Grounding in Botany" are now available. Instruction includes practice of hands-on classroom experiments, lectures, networking, creation of lesson plans, resource reviews, and more. In addition, the course provides participants with a $1,500 stipend and a $500 classroom grant for supplies.

Grounding in Botany utilizes real organisms: participants will work with both Wisconsin Fast Plants and its well-studied relative Arabidopsis. The course uses the stages of the life cycle as a foundation for explorations of plant reproduction, the cell, genetics, respiration, photosynthesis, and many other topics. The course frames exploration in current events and current scientific research and will include guest lectures from researchers at Caltech and UC Irvine.

"Grounding in Botany" takes place 4 days a week (Tuesday-Friday) for 4 weeks (July 15-August 8, 2008). The course is open to high school biology/life science teachers. If you would like more information or would like to apply, please visit
http://www.huntington.org/Education/gib.html or feel free to contact Mike Kerkman at mkerkman@huntington.org or 626-405-3586.
