COMMUNITY BEAUTIFICATION GRANT

The Community Beautification Grant is a competitive annual matching grant of up to $10,000 awarded to community groups to fund neighborhood beautification projects. The grant program is administered by the City of Los Angeles, Board of Public Works, Office of Community Beautification.

The City of Los Angeles launched the Community Beautification Grant, originally known as Neighborhood Matching Fund, in 1998. The concept of the grant was adopted from a program in Seattle, Washington and modified to meet the needs of the diverse communities of the City of Los Angeles.

For the 2007-08 cycle of funding, the Office of Community Beautification has a budget of approximately $800,000 to award about 90 grants citywide.

SAVE THE REDWOODS LEAGUE FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Grants are awarded to qualified sponsors (non-profit organizations and schools) in the following areas:

  1. Curriculum Development and Educational/Interpretative Supplies: grants for curriculum development, materials, and supplies to be used to initiate or maintain redwood and forest stewardship education. Grant requests to design, conduct, and evaluate innovative classroom activities or field studies should describe prior review of existing redwood curriculum materials and propose an effort to expand or build upon these resources. There must be a demonstrated need for the new curricula and support materials or a demonstrated need for equipment or supplies to support existing redwood curricula. This grant is open to any school in the United States, with priority given to programs where students would not otherwise be exposed to forest ecology and stewardship.
  2. Outdoor Education: grants for day or overnight educational outings to California’s redwoods. This includes, but is not limited to, trips to outdoor education facilities and parks. This grant is open only to educators working with students in grades K-12 within the state of California.
  3. Teacher and Interpreter Continuing Education: Teachers and interpreters wishing to gain accreditation or experience to teach Environmental or Outdoor Education can apply through a qualified sponsor for continuing education grant money to attend Environmental Education training workshops or accreditation programs. This grant is open to teachers working at any non-profit or public school in California, with preference given to applications addressing the redwood forest. Proposals must describe how the grant recipient will apply the newly acquired knowledge and skills within the funding period. Organizational requests for funds to design, conduct, and evaluate educator workshops that enhance understanding of redwood forest ecology and stewardship, as well as teaching methodology, will also be considered.
  4. Individual or Group Student Projects: A student or group of students can apply through a qualified sponsor for funding for special projects directly related to redwood education or redwood stewardship projects in parks.
  5. Program Evaluation: Previous grant recipients are encouraged to apply in this category to strengthen the effectiveness and reach of their programs. Well planned data collection techniques and thorough analysis of quantitative and qualitative information must be demonstrated.
  6. Other: Grants for projects that do not specifically fall into any of the categories above, but will further achieve Save-the-Redwoods League’s Redwood Forest Stewardship goals, may be considered on an individual proposal basis.
