Arbor Day Poster Contest - 2010
California 5th Grade Educators:
You and your students are invited to participate in the annual Arbor Day Poster Contest, sponsored      nationally by The National Arbor Day foundation and Toyota, and locally by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and the California Community Forests Foundation.

California Environthon Conference & Contest

2009 Theme:  Biodiversity In A Changing World
What:  The California Envirothon is an outdoor natural resource education program for high school students grade 9-12. In the field, students are challenged to work as a team to answer written questions and conduct hands-on projects focusing on environmental issues.  Students from all over California join together to explore the environment in five disciplines: Forestry, Wildlife, Aquatics, Soils and a current environmental issue.  Visit the website for details.

Federal Junior Duck Stamp Program Contest - 2009

What:  The contest teaches conservation of wetlands and migratory birds.  Materials include lesson plans for art and suggestions for teaching wetlands conservation. Winners receive cash prizes and winning selections are published in next year's calendar. 

The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes
Who:  Youth, ages 8 to 18 as of April 30, 2009

An annual award honoring outstanding young leaders who have made a difference to people and our planet.  Ten winners are selected nationwide.  Half of the winners have focused on helping their communities and fellow humans.  The second half have focused on protecting the health and sustainability of the environment.  The prize places great emphasis on service above self.  Winners receive $2,000 to be applied towards higher education.

National Environmental Education Week

What:  National Environmental Education Week, made possible by Cannon, promotes environmental literacy and stewardship among over 3.5 million students annually by creating a full week of environmentally-themed lessons and activities for students in K-12th grade classrooms, home schools, nature centers, zoos, museums and aquariums.

Each year, thousands of educators from across the country use EE Week's online resources to incorporate environmental learning into their classrooms in an educational week-long prelude to Earth Day. Registration for EE Week is free.

President's Environmental Youth Awards

What:  The Environmental Protection Agency recognizes youth for projects that demonstrate commitment to the environment.  Past awards have recognized recycling programs, tree planting programs, student created videos, skits and newsletters highlighting environmental issues, environmental science projects and development of nature preserves.  Winners receive recognition certificate from the President.  Check the website for application form and details. Application cannot be submitted electronically, but must be submitted via mail.

WAL-MART Kids Recycling Challenge
Who:  K-6  elementary schools

The Wal-Mart Kids Recycling Challenge is a fun and educational program that teaches students about recycling while earning money for their schools.  Participating schools earn $5.00 for every 60 gallon collection bag they fill with plastic grocery bags and bring to a local Wal-Mart store for recycling by March 31st.  This annual contest has early sign up dates, usually by July 1st of each academic year.  In addition to earning money, the top three schools earn prizes ranging from $3,000 to $1,000.


Young Naturalist Awards

The Young Naturalist Awards, a program from the American Museum of Natural History, is a research based essay contest to promote participation and communication in science.  All entrants will receive a personalized letter from the judges.  Contest winners, two from each grade, win cash scholarships awards from $500 to $2,500 and an all expense paid trip to the award ceremony in New York City.  Winners essays' are published on the Museum's web site.
