WHISKEYTOWN OFFERS INTERPRETIVE AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS IN SEPTEMBER

The popular moonlight kayak tours on Whiskeytown Lake are scheduled at 6:30pm from September 10 through September 14, 2008. Reservations can be made for these special tours by calling the kayak reservation line at (530) 242-3462 starting on Wednesday August 27 from 9am to 12 noon. Only four spaces may be reserved per phone call for this special program.

Special walks are also scheduled for the general public in September into the recently burned area in Whiskey Creek. The first series of walks are scheduled for 9am each Saturday on September 13, 20 and 27. Space will be limited to 20 people each morning. Reservations can be made by calling the Visitor Center at 246-1225. “This is an opportunity to see the how natural wildfires can effect change in the landscape in a variety of ways, especially in the areas where the fire and the suppression efforts meet,” stated Milestone.

School group programs include a short hike into the Whiskey Creek area to discuss the recent wildfire and restoration efforts (fifth grade and above), a gold rush tour of the Tower House Historic District (fourth grade), and a hunt for animal tracks at Brandy Creek Beach (second and third grade). “This is a great opportunity for our students to learn more about their recreation area and what the National Park Service is currently doing to preserve and protect special places like Whiskeytown and the other 390 significant sites around the country such as Yellowstone National Park and Manassas National Battlefield Park to name a few,” continued Milestone. Teachers can call 530-242-3451 for more information or to schedule a special school group program.

SAMPLE ACTIVITY GUIDE FOR NATURAL RESOURCE AGENCIES
Education Coordinators that participated in the environmental education workshops during May can view a sample environmental education activity. The activity topic is Adaptation of Plants and Animals to the Whiskeytown Area. The activity is correlated to California Science Standards and the Environmental Principles and Concepts for 3rd, 4th and 7th grades. This information will remain on the web page until September 30, 2008.
