Mather Field

On a day that threatened rain, Mrs. Green lead her 5^th grade class from Earl LeGette Elementary in the San Juan Unified School District on an exploration of Mather Field’s vernal pools.

Parent volunteers transported students to Sacramento Splash headquarters at the heart of the former Mather Air Force Base.

During their visit to Splash at Mather Field students examined aquatic life, discussed water quality and the way we live in our watersheds. Splash provided microscopes to let students and parents see even the smallest “critters.”

Live frogs, snakes, and rabbits were also on display.

A short distance from Splash headquarters, the class explored the Mather vernal pools, seasonal wetlands unique to California.

Splash guides led students and parent volunteers on trails throughout the vernal pools.

The class discovered and experienced many of the plants and animals that depend on clean water for their existence.

Students took notes about the plant and animal life they had been already studying in class, and took great delight in identifying the various species.

After returning to LeGette Elementary, students created various informational projects to share with others what they had learned at Splash about California's Vernal Pools.

The entire curriculum Mrs. Green and her class followed is available from Splash on CD, or at their website, www.sacsplash.org.

Standards Alignment:

The Splash curriculum is aligned with the California science standards. It also integrates standards for language arts, social studies, and math. The Teacher’s Manual lists the standards covered in each lesson. The elementary curriculum is best suited for grades 4 and 5.

California Waterfowl Association presents a dynamic, hands-on, science and art program designed to teach students ecological principles such as: species niches, physical and behavioral adaptations, habitat creation through water and sediment transport, and environmentally friendly conservation.

Who Can Participate?

K-7 public and private school classes, and home school groups.
Youth groups, such as boy/girl Scouts, and the YMCA.
Including Sacramento, Yolo, Solano, and South Placer Counties.

Choose from Six Topics

Wetland Plants: Students examine cross sections of wetland plants and draw inferences about how plants transport oxygen and nutrients to submerged parts.
Nest Mania: Through the construction of a bird's nest, students will learn about nesting complexities, materials, behaviors, research, and the use of man-made nests.
Fascinating Feathers: Students learn about flight adaptations through the exploration of feather, wing, and bone structures and functions.
Marshes with a Mission: Metaphors and flowcharts get students thinking about wetland roles in transport and storage of water, sediments, and pollutants.
What Are Waterfowl? Students analyze bird physiology to learn about avian adaptations, anatomy, and identification.
Take Flight: In this ring-toss game, students learn about North American waterfowl migration routes, positive and negative factors affecting bird survival, and the uses of banding.

Presentations are typically an hour in length, and consist of one topic from the list above, as well as a demonstration on how to participate in the Junior Duck Program.

Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest for Students Grades K-12

Entry deadline: March 15 (DEADLINE PASSED - this is an annual contest - look for updates on next year's contest in Fall 2008)

The Junior Duck Stamp is a nationwide program to teach the importance of conserving our wetlands and migratory birds. It pairs science, the arts, and other core subjects to creatively teach greater awareness of our natural resources. As part of the program, students are invited to participate in a free annual art competition that helps students tie together lessons on animal form and function, plant science, observation, wetland habitats, and more. The art competition is open to students from kindergarten to grade 12. All entries for the California art competition are due on March 15 each year. Fourth Grade Salmon Artwork Contest

Sacramento County fourth graders are invited annually to participate in the American River Salmon Festival Art Contest. The winning artwork is used to create the Salmon Festival poster and the student is awarded a savings bond and a classroom ice cream social. Deadline is generally mid-January. Disney Environmentality Challenge Winners 2007 & 2008

Sacramento County was again home to California's Grand Prize Winner of the 2008 Disney Environmentality Challenge. Sylvia Rodriguez's 5th grade class at Phoebe Hearst Elementary earned the top prize for their project, Our Starfish: Native Plants in the American River Watershed. The project included planting a native plant garden at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center, writing a play and making a documentary. Mickey Mouse made a surprise visit to the class to announce the award. Last year's winner was also a Sacramento County classroom. Sutterville Elementary's Mitch Carnie, his class of fifth grade students, and their parents traveled to Disneyland in May 2007 as California's Grand Prize winners. Their project, "The Great Watershed Investigation: Saving Our Burrowing Owls & Raptors," focused on the decline of burrowing owls in the area surrounding the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. RAFT Now Open for Business

The Resource Area for Teaching (RAFT) is now open and serving the greater Sacramento area. RAFT is an innovative program designed to help teachers bring needed materials to their classrooms. RAFT has been in operation for over ten years in the Silicon Valley. Working in collaboration with the Grant Joint Union School District, RAFT has now opened a new location at 3136 Howard Street, McClellan, CA.

Sacramento Splash

This is a place-based, watershed education program that provides opportunities for Sacramento County students and their families to explore the diversity of life in our local aquatic ecosystems, including vernal pools (elementary curriculum) and streams (high school curriculum). Through their studies in the classroom and in the field, students learn the importance of water quality and how they can improve water habitats where they live.

Calvine High School Creek Stewards

In 2006, the Sacramento Urban Creeks Council presented Calvine High School in Elk Grove with the annual Creek Steward Award for the student-led monitoring and restoration work along Strawberry Creek.
