Model Environmental Education Programs

Many teachers across California conduct exemplary environmental education programs in their classrooms to connect students with the environment while teaching content standards. These programs offer hands-on learning opportunities for students and promote environmental service learning projects in the community. The CREEC Network is happy to showcase some of these model programs from Alameda and Costa Costa Counties (thanks to the generous support of StopWaste.Org).

We invite teachers to learn more about how they can provide similar opportunities to their students so that all children grow up connected to the environment and eager to make a difference in their own communities. The five school programs listed below are willing to share their successes with you. Please contact Laura Powell if you have an EE program at your school that you wish showcased on our website.

Franklin Elementary School, Oakland
Franklin Garden of Learning

Instruction taking place in the
Franklin Elementary School garden

Lesson Plans Available:
Garden Ecosystems and Habitat
Plant Structure and Function

Rock LaFleche Community School, Oakland
Rock LaFleche Garden Squad

Rock LaFleche Garden Squad
working in the school

California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) are implementing
the Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) pursuant to AB 1548
(Pavley, Chapter 665, Statutes of 2003-PDF) and AB 1721 (Pavley,
Chapter 581, Statutes of 2005-PDF). These laws mandate the development
of a Unified Education Strategy to bring education about the
environment into California’s schools. Other key partners include: the
Office of the Secretary for Education, Curriculum and Supplemental
Materials Commission, State Board of Education, the State Department of
Education, and the California Resources Agency.

Key Elements of EEI Include:

Development of California’s Environmental Principles & Concepts, (EP&Cs) - completed

Alignment of the EP&C’s to California’s Academic Content Standards - completed

Development of a Model Curriculum to teach the EP&C’s to California’s K-12 students – in
process. Field testing of the EEI Curriculum is occurring in districts
throughout California in 2007 – 2008 and will be followed by pilot
testing of the curricula. In Orange County, the O.C. Dept. of Ed’s
“ACCESS” program was invited, and accepted, to be part of the field and
pilot testing process.

Incorporation of the EP&C’s into criteria for
instructional materials adoption in science, history/social science,
English/language arts and, mathematics – occurring

Alignment of state agency’s diverse environmental education programs and materials with the EP&C’s – occurring

Environmental/Science Education Providers:

When the EEI Curricula is released in final format, teachers
will be looking for support from local organizations to help them
address the Environmental Principles & Concepts that will be
integrated into their textbooks.

Now is the time to audit your existing programs to look for ways to incorporate the EP&Cs and align new programs to them.

Recommended Steps to Follow

Download the EEI Model Curriculum Plan available at
. This document lists the five Environmental Principles and Concepts.
More importantly, it describes specific EEI Learning Objectives that
lead students to mastery of specified standards while addressing the
EP&Cs.

Become very familiar with the EEI Model Curriculum Plan.

Explore the other resources available at the EEI website. Drafts of the units being developed are available for review.

Use the EEI Planning Pages to develop a big picture plan for incorporating the EP&C's and the EEI Learning Objectives into your program curricula.

Use the EEI Audit Tool to analyze each of your lesson plans in relationships with the EEI Learning Objectives.

Obviously this process has been distilled to just its essentials!

Please contact me if you have questions or want specific support.

numerous focus group meetings and discussion sessions were conducted to
gather information regarding design elements for the Model Curriculum.
Design alternatives were developed as a result of these meetings. The results indicated that teachers
would require the Model Curriculum to address grade and discipline-specific
standards. In response, the Model Curriculum is being designed to fit with
teachers existing lesson plans without increasing instructional content.
Each lesson may stand alone or be used in combination with other units. The
Model Curriculum will use content and instructional materials already
adopted, incorporating the Environmental Principals & Concepts (EP&Cs) as the content for instruction. It will

Go to resources and find reports. This report contains findings
and implications of a focus group study done by Environmental Education and Training and Partnership to increase the
effectiveness of reaching formal educators (i.e. teachers) with
messages about Environmental Education (EE) and related training. Focus groups were used to
identify teachers perceptions about EE so that EETAP partners and other
environmental educators could better develop messages to what
teachers already know and understand about EE, and avoid using language
that is complicated, jargon-laden, threatening, or unappealing. Their recommendation is the best way to talk about EE is to not call it EE and to emphasize the specific educational outcomes of EE in general. http://eetap.org/

North American Association Environmental Education NAAEE offers a diverse array of materials of interest to the EE practitioner and publishes new topical materials on a regular basis. Take note of two research studies Environmental Education Research, Special Issue on Significant Life Experiences and Elementary School Teachers' Beliefs About Teaching Environmental Education-Final Report. http://www.naaee.org

The Impact of Environmentality-Related Education on Academic Achievement: A Literature Survey. A Literature Review of Environmental Education on Academic Achievement (Community Resources for Science commissioned by Stopwaste.Org, 2006). The purpose of this survey was to determine whether meaningful evidence exists that shows a connection between environmentally-based education programs and improvements in academic achievement. 8 studies out of 200 documents reviewed provided strong evidence to demonstrate environment-based programs improve academic achievement. Further findings were study of the natural environment can be a significant factor in academic achievement, certain teaching practices and teaching support in EE programs appear to strengthen academic outcomes, and more and better research is needed to reach conclusive results. http://www.crscience.org/informal/index.html

Understanding and Developing Elementary Environmental Education in the Bay Area (Community Resources for Science commissioned by Stopwaste.Org, 2003). This report examines the intersection between the array of environmental education programs and the world of the elementary (K-5) public school classroom teacher in Alameda County, CA. The data in this report support the following broad conclusions: 1. There is a rich array of EE programs in the Bay Area 2. EE programs can help teachers to accomplish teaching goals 4. EE programs providers attract teachers to their programs... 5. Specific science concepts and types of experiences are underrepresented through local program offerings. http://www.crscience.org/informal/index.html

WEBSITES

Association of Outdoor and Environmental Education This
