REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
Calaveras Students Put Sunlight to Work An energy-conservation project for science students got things cookin' last week at Calaveras High School. Students in the Integrated Science II classes tested their homemade solar cookers in the late morning sun Friday, and examined the work of their classmates.Using primarily cardboard and tinfoil, students crafted solar-powered cookers and ovens to learn firsthand how to use the sun's natural energy."They realize how much energy does come from the sun and how little effort it takes to capture it," said Lorraine Angel, science teacher and department chair. This is the first year the science department has done this project. On Friday, students' efforts were tested when they heated water in black cups with their cookers. From 10 to 11 a.m., and again from 1 to 2 p.m., Jim Pesout, Integrated Science II teacher, recorded the water temperatures. Enterprise photo by Kate Gonzales.

Disney’s Environmentality Challenge Registration Deadline: December 19, 2008 This program provides an opportunity for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes in the State of California to “think green.” The purpose is to encourage students to think and act environmentally at school, at home and in their communities. Third and fourth grade students can participate in the pledge, and fifth grade students are invited to also participate in the class project where they target a real-world environmental problem, then develop and implement an action plan to address it. http://disney.go.com/environmentality/dec/california.html
