REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

Growing Up WILD is an early childhood education program that builds on children's sense of wonder about nature and invites them to explore wildlife and the world around them. Three dates to choose from: Saturday February 27 in Sonora, Tuesday, March 16 or Wednesday, March 17, at Mountain Oaks School in San Andreas. Earth Day Festival, Sunday, April 18th from 11:00- 4:00, Victory Park, by Haggin Museum in Stockton, free. "Be a Breath of Fresh Air" is the theme of this year's Earth Day Festival which will have dozens of informative, interactive booths, displays and exhibits as well as food and crafts. Join families in the Family Fun Bike Ride and Parade, or come for the entertainment featuring ethnic dance groups and local bands. Special activities will be available for children; including the passport card to be stamped as the student searches for the answers to different environmental questions. Recycle Rex's Statewide Challenge Collect aluminum and plastic CRV beverage containers from home, school, your neighbors or even have your class organize a recycling drive for your entire school! Climate Change Presentations for High Schools. Alliance for Climate Education will make free presentations to high schools and also offers grants and scholarship opportunities to students. More information at http://www.climateeducation.org/

DELTA Studies Institute, San Joaquin Office of Education DELTA Studies is an engaging California standards-based curriculum centered upon the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The Institute includes a day-long tour of the Delta and two workshops throughout the school year. Stipend of $200 and unit of credit offered

Exemplary Programs in Region 6

Calaveras High School Earth Club The Calaveras High School Earth Club is the most active club on campus, and an example of an exemplary environmental education program in Region 6. They raise funds by recycling on campus every week, and use that money and community partners to fund many very successful projects. This includes rewarding local shoppers for using reusable bags, adopting a section of Highway 49 to keep clean, hosting a lightbulb trade-in day at a local store, and conducting daily Earth Week activities on campus. Delta Experience: Four kindergarten classes at John Riggio School in Lincoln Unified, Stockton, CA had a special day devoted to activities involving environmental science and the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta. They got to climb on boats from the Coast Guard and Fish and Wildlife, create a mural with a local artist, explore local plants and animals and much more, supported by volunteers from the local community.

Wood Duck Box Project

The wood duck nesting box project undertaken by Lynda Raquel's fifth grade class won Disney's Environmentality Challenge last year. Lynda's class at John Muir School built two boxes which were installed at Lodi Lake Nature Area. The students learned about wood ducks and did individual projects about the ducks. Friends of the Lower Calaveras, a newly formed community group dedicated to restoration of the Calaveras River is looking for teachers and classes interested in doing projects along the river. For more information go to http://flcr.savestockton.org/Welcome.html

California Aquarium Education Project (CAEP) - Salmon in the Schools

Through a classroom experience of hatching live fish, CAEP will introduce students to the value of aquatic environments, the balance that must be met to maintain, protect and enhance California fisheries and aquatic habitats and enable students to understand how their actions affect these valuable resources. http://www.dfg.ca.gov/oceo/caep/
