Delta Education for Learning Teaching and Action (DELTA) Studies
The Delta Studies Curriculum is a K-12c urriculum that focuses on the various aspects of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Each grade level unit is grade-level, age-level appropriate and tied to the CA State Science Standards. The lessons are place-based, hands-on and literature tied. SCHOOL ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAM WORKSHOP

Concerned about out-of-control energy costs? The School Energy Efficiency (SEE) Program is funding two workshops for Central Valley school district administrators, teachers, and facility managers to learn how energy efficiency improvements can help schools reduce their energy costs and enhance learning conditions for students and staff. Fifty five school districts in the Central Valley have actively participated in the SEE Program and received energy efficiency educational and facility

improvement services. These workshops, scheduled for November 17th in Bakersfield, and November 18th in Madera, will provide a forum for these schools to share their experiences with other schools in the Valley and explain how they implemented effective energy efficiency activities, particularly demonstration projects that use school site energy retrofits as a “teaching tool” for students to learn about energy efficiency and conservation.

Technologies to be showcased will include:

solar tubes that allow natural daylight into buildings

high efficient HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) technologies

the latest high-tech lighting products and much more. These workshops will also provide free instructional materials aligned to State standards and free resources to help schools identify the most cost-effective strategies to improve their energy efficiency. The day will conclude with a tour of the

demonstration project at the host site.

Education and the Environment Initiative Assembly Bill 1548

Environmental education providers and representatives of non-profit organizations are invited to attend meetings to learn about the work undertaken thus far to implement the Education and the Environment Initiative [EEI] (Assembly Bill 1548 [Pavley, Chapter 665, Statutes of 2003]).

The Education and the Environment Initiative was signed into law in Ocrober 2003. It mandates the development of a unified strategy to bring education about the environment into California's K-12 schools. Specifically, this law requires:

Development of education principles and concepts for the environment;
Alignment of the environmental principles and concepts to California's academic content standards to ensure that students achieve mastery;
Development of a model curriculum for K-12 schools;
Incorporation of the environmental principles and concepts into criteria for textbook adoption in science, history/social science, English/language arts and mathematics; and
Alignment of the state's diverse environmental education programs with the environmental principles and concepts.

The purpose of this listening session is to bring stakeholders up to date on the progress made in implementing the Initiative, answer any questions, and share the next steps. The Education and the Environment Initiative represents landmark legislation - your involvement is encouraged. Looking for some new ideas to boost one of your Environmental Education lessons? Be sure to search through the free resource directory offered by the CREEC Network at WWW.CREEC.org. Once you log on just click on the resource directory or your region. The directory offers a listing of region and statewide resources that are available to educators. If you have a resource that you would like listed you can submit it right there on the web site.

Welcome back to the 2003-2004 academic year. If you are new to the California Regional Environmental Education Community (CREEC) Network I hope you will take advantage of all the resources we offer the education community. One of the many resources we offer is the CREEC Network website. If you are looking for materials, guest speakers, field trip ideas or anything related to EE, then this is the place for you! If you are someone who has EE resources to share and you are not listed on the site yet, you can sign up to be listed.

If you are returning to the CREEC Network, welcome back! We have many exciting things planned for this year. As always we will focus on environmental topics, but look for opportunities for new funding sources, grants, activities and resources.

Materials Available for Checkout

The San Joaquin County Office of Education Office of Science and Special Projects is please to be able to provide quality materials to assist local teachers with their Environmental Education lessons. For those who are trained we have 2 Enviroscape Models that help teach about watersheds. Also available for check out are Project FEED kits (Families Exploring Environmental Dilemmas), and Audubon Bird & Bat suitcases. If you are interested in checking out any of these materials or are looking for something else we might be able to help with, please contact Heather Fogg, Environmental Education coordinator at 209.468.9119.

School Energy Efficiency (SEE) Program Set to Begin in 55 Central Valley School Districts
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) awarded the State & Consumer Services Agency (CSCA) a $4.5 million grant to implement the SEE Proggram. The program provides a variety of energy education resources and facility improvement services FREE OF CHARGE to school districts located in the counties of Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Tulare, Yolo, El Dorado, and Mariposa.
