Occidental Arts & Ecology Center's School Garden Teacher Training, Summer 2010 Dates http://www.oaec.org/school-garden The core of OAEC’s School Garden Program is the five-day residential summer training which offers an array of skills and techniques focused on the instructional school garden, and its integration into multiple subject areas using experiential learning. Through a combination of lecture, resource materials and hands-on sessions we teach participants organic gardening, permaculture, nutrition, garden design, team building, fundraising, art in the garden, and more.
HOW TO APPLY: Please note that acceptance to the School Garden Program, unlike most workshops at OAEC, is by application only. If your school applied previously and would like to reapply, please contact us so we may retrieve your application from the waiting list and update as needed. 2010 Summer Session Dates: • June 14th - 18th • July 12th - 16th • August 2nd - 6th
Workshops: The Edible Schoolyard Academy, Creating Garden and Kitchen Classrooms in Every Community - Berkeley When: July 8th & 9th; July 13th & 14th; July 16th & 17th Where: The Edible Schoolyard garden and kitchen classroom ∙ Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School ∙ 1781 Rose Street ∙ Berkeley, CA 94703 Description: The Chez Panisse Foundation presents the second annual Edible Schoolyard Academy: Creating Garden and Kitchen Classrooms in Every Community. The academies are designed to support emerging garden and kitchen programs nationwide, and to strengthen resource and information sharing among them. Led by Edible Schoolyard staff and guest presenters, the academies provide a two-day Edible Education immersion. Through hands-on activities, presentations, guided discussion, breakout sessions, and student-led tours, participants will learn to use tools for teaching Edible Education—an integrated approach to education in the garden, kitchen, and classroom. Specific topics covered include curriculum integration, class scheduling, managing volunteers, program administration, and funding strategies. Participants will receive Chez Panisse Foundation publications, The Garden and Kitchen Companions, and will leave the academy with tools for developing programs in their own communities. Who Should Attend: The academy is intended for garden, kitchen, and classroom educators and/or program administrators who are interested in modeling their program on the Edible Schoolyard. Candidates should have direct involvement in a garden- and kitchen-based educational program, or have a development structure for such a program in place. Participants may attend as individuals, or in small teams. Preference will be given to middle school educators and school districts that support team-teacher collaboration. How to Apply: Fill out and submit the electronic application by April 15th. Applicants will be confirmed, and additional registration materials will be sent, by April 28th. To ensure enrollment, candidates must complete the registration process and upon acceptance must pay half the tuition fee ($200) as a non-refundable deposit by May 15th. The remaining fee of $200 must be paid by July 1st, 2010.
Project WET & the Waters of Kern County June 8 – 10, 2010 at the Kern County Water Agency in Bakersfield 8am to 3pm
The Kern County Water Agency and Kern County Superintendent of Schools invite all K-12 educators in Kern County to join us for a Project WET workshop that will engage you in a variety of hands-on activities for use with your students, while you learn about Kern County’s water resources, water treatment, and local water education programs. Each participant will walk away with their own Project WET guide filled with 90 California standards aligned activities to enrich your curriculum!
This workshop is the first of a strand of FREE Science professional development trainings offered by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools and Kern County Science Foundation. Teachers who attend all three training dates will have the option of purchasing California State University Bakersfield Extended University Credit.
CEU credit is also available for interested educators to purchase for just this workshop. Space for this FREE workshop is limited to the first (30) educators to register by June 4th. Location: Kern County Water Agency Bakersfield, California

The Forestry Institute for Teachers (FIT) The Forestry Institute is a multi-day residence workshop held at four northern California locations. The goal of FIT is to provide K-12 teachers with knowledge, skills, and tools to effectively teach their students about forest ecology and forest resource management practices. The program brings together natural resource specialists and teachers from rural and urban settings for one week, working side by side to gain a deeper understanding of the intricate interrelationship of forest ecosystems and human use of natural resources. Each institute can accommodate 30 to 45 participants. All meals and lodging are free. Teachers are provided with extensive classroom and curriculum materials, and a $200 stipend on completion and implementation of a forest related curriculum unit or project conducted in their classrooms. Ocean Futures Society Teacher Workshop Deadline: June 10, 2010 Educators are invited to join the Ocean Futures team June 21-25 in a 5-day teacher's workshop on the beautiful Gaviota Coast, just north of Santa Barbara. This is an opportunity to get into the field and experience what you teach everyday. 2010 Sierra Nevada Teacher Institute California Institute for Biodiversity & California State Parks June 18,19, 20 and 25, 26, 27 Join us as we explore the causes and effects of climate change in the Sierra Nevada landscape. This institute will accommodate teachers of upper-grade sciences by concentrating on the more advanced topics of climate change and experimental design. The institute will take place at the Jack L. Boyd Outdoor School (near Yosemite). There we will explore the Sierra Nevada and focus on climate change's influence on natural systems. This intensive course will integrate California science content standards for 6th through 12th grade. Teachers will receive a teacher manual, an interactive CD-ROM, and other curricular materials. Family Nature Summits July 5-11, Lake Tahoe Family Nature Summits (a national EE and outdoor program for families, founded by the National Wildlife Federation) will sponsor one teacher from California or Nevada to participate in the Family Nature Summit in Lake Tahoe on July 5-11, 2010. Oceans, Literacy and Science Residential Teacher Institute August 1- 6, 2010, Monterey The Aquarium's Oceans, Literacy and Science Residential Teacher Institute is specifically designed for non-local teachers of K-5 students from around the country. The program provides curriculum that integrates science with language arts and literacy, as well as math, social studies and the arts; inquiry investigations with hands-on, standards-based activities; explorations of ocean habitats at coastal sites and the Monterey Bay Aquarium; integration of content and process skills, including ELL and science notebook strategies; continuing online collaboration with colleagues and Aquarium educators; study of conservation issues and grade-level appropriate actions; free busing from Stevenson School to field sites and the Aquarium. K-5 fulltime classroom teachers with a minimum of two years of experience are eligible and who live more than 150 miles from Monterey. Cultural Resources of the Santa Monica Mountains and Southern California: American Indian, Mission, and Rancho History is a 3-day workshop. The class will involve lecture/discussion, hiking, hands-on activities, homework assignments and a field trip. The workshop meets 3rd through 5th grade standards.
A $35.00 materials fee is required for all participants in advance of the workshop. This two-day workshop is designed for 1st-5th grade educators and will focus on the Sun-Earth system, the Chumash perspective on the Sun-Earth connections, and how the sun has influenced what we see in the Mediterranean Biome of the Santa Monica Mountains.
