EPA Rachel Carson Contest- Deadline: June 10, 2009 The US EPA, along with the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Generations United, and the Rachel Carson Council, Inc., are sponsoring the 3rd Annual Rachel Carson intergenerational "Sense of Wonder" contest. Entries must involve an intergenerational team and describe how this project brought the team in touch with the natural world. This approach reflects Carson's desire to have adults share nature and discovery with children. Submissions are accepted in the categories of photography, essay, poetry, and dance. Stewardship Council Grants – due June 19, 2009 The Pacific Forest and Watershed Lands Stewardship Council invites Northern and Central California non-profit organizations to apply for grants focused on getting youth outside. As part of its Youth Investment Program, the Stewardship Council will grant between $2 million and $2.5 million in funding to parks and programs that connect underserved youth (ages 13 to 18) to the outdoors. 2009 Healthy Sprouts Awards Program Deadline: Oct. 17, 2009 The National Gardening Association (http://www.garden.org/) encourages the growth of health-focused youth garden programs through the Healthy Sprouts Awards The awards support school and youth garden programs that teach about nutrition and the issue of hunger in the United States. To be eligible for the 2009 Healthy Sprouts Awards, a school or organization must plan to garden in 2010 with at least fifteen children between the ages of 3 and 18. The selection of winners is based on the demonstrated relationship between the garden program and nutrition and hunger issues in the United States. In 2009, the program will present awards to twenty schools or organizations. Each recipient program will receive gardening supplies and resources, including gift certificates toward the purchase of gardening materials from Gardener's Suppl. The top five programs will each receive a certificate valued at $500; fifteen more programs will each receive a $200 gift certificate. http://www.kidsgardening.com/healthysprouts.asp
Amateur Coastal Photography Competition - Due July 15, 2009 Entries are now being accepted for the annual Amateur Coastal Photography Competition sponsored by the California Coastal Commission and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. Up to five color photos may be submitted depicting scenery of the California coast, native coastal wildlife, or people using the coast. There is also a new humor category this year. Entry is free and excellent donated prizes include two-night stays at Fairmont hotels and tickets aboard a Hornblower yacht cruise. Postmark deadline is July 15, 2009. Coastal Stewardship Stories – July 1, 2009 The California Coastal Commission invites the public to submit personal stories of coastal stewardship in celebration of the 25th anniversary of California Coastal Cleanup Day, in conjunction with our Coastal Stewardship Pledge. If you have taken part in something (small or large) to care for our coast and ocean, please share your story and/or pictures in order to inspire others to take action in their daily lives. Your stories may be posted on the Coastal Commission website! Submit your coastal stewardship story by July 1st for the chance to win a "Coast-Lover's Prize Package" (a framed Coastal Cleanup Day poster – either current or from our archives, a 2009 Coastal Cleanup Day T-Shirt, and several other surprises...). Make your submission by email to coast4u@coastal.ca.gov (please keep any photos to under 500 Kb in jpg format) or by postal mail to: Coastal Steward Stories, California Coastal Commission, 45 Fremont Street, Suite 2000, San Francisco, CA 94105 Be sure to include your phone number, mailing address, and email (if available) in order to be eligible for the contest. Green Ambassador’s Grant for High Schools Environmental Charter High School in Los Angeles just got a grant from the State Charter School association to disseminate its environmental service learning program, Green Ambassadors, as well as some other aspects of its environmental curriculum (Earth Day activities, interdisciplinary projects, Senior Thesis).
Right now they’re looking to identify 10 CA high schools that are interested in receiving curriculum materials and professional development support in one or more of these areas. Outdoor Classroom Grant Program ~ Deadline: Rolling
Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation, International Paper, and National
Geographic Explorer! classroom magazine have partnered to create an outdoor
classroom grant. The goal is to provide schools with additional resources to
improve their science curriculum by engaging students in hands-on experiences
