The American Birding Association provides scholarships to help young people who are interested in birds to attend summer camps, workshops, conventions and other bird-related activities.


Teen Ink: Environmental Solutions Contest
There are no deadlines.

Do your teenage students have a creative plan to stop pollution? Have they found a way to encourage recycling in your neighborhood? They can share their ideas to solve an environmental problem or describe a current solution. Every month one teen is honored for the best Environmental Solutions article. Essays are published in Teen Ink magazine and contest winners receive $25 and a copy of the magazine featuring their environmental solution. Teen Ink will only consider original essays written by teens. Essays should be between 150 and 1,000 words. Possible topics include global warming, clean water, species preservation, air quality, the rain forest, alternative power, depletion of resources and more! Epidemiology is the science of exploring patterns of disease, illness and injury within populations, with the goal of developing methods for prevention, control and treatment of the problem. Substantial scholarships are awarded to winners.


Christopher Columbus Awards Program
For students in grades 6-8

This annual award is sponsored by the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation in cooperation with the National Science Foundation. With the help of an adult coach, students in grades 6-8 work in teams to identify a community issue and use science and technology to develop an innovative solution.


River of Words Art and Poetry Contest

Each year, in affiliation with The Library of Congress Center for the Book, River of Words conducts a free international poetry and art contest for youth on the theme of watersheds. The contest is designed to help youth explore the natural and cultural history of the place they live, and to express, through poetry and art, what they discover.


Igniting Creative Energy National Student Challenge; for students in K-12

The Igniting Creative Energy Challenge is an educational competition designed to encourage students to learn more about energy and the environment. Students may express their ideas in the form of science projects, essays, stories, artwork, photographs, music, video or Web site projects. They may also submit recent service projects or results from Energy Patrol activities.


Canon Envirothon

The Canon Envirothon is an annual competition in which winning state/provincial teams compete for recognition and scholarships by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management. The teams, each consisting of five high school-aged students from participating US States and Canadian Provinces, exercise their training and problem-solving skills in a competition centered on four universal testing categories (i.e., soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, and wildlife) and a current environmental issue.


2006 Arbor Day National Poster Contest: “Trees are Terrific...in All Shapes and Sizes!”

A free curriculum kit explaining how to conduct the annual Arbor Day poster contest is now available. This contest activity is open to all California fifth grade children assisted by their teachers, parents, youth or club leaders. The kit contains suggestions for activities and projects that will increase student awareness and appreciation of the importance of trees and conservation of forests. The contest theme for 2006 is “Trees are Terrific...in All Shapes and Sizes.” These activities are correlated to California’s science standards! Junior Duck Stamp Program and Art Competition

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service oversees the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Program. Each year, students are invited to create duck stamp drawings to show what they have learned about wetland habitat and waterfowl conservation. These drawings can be entered into the annual Junior Duck Stamp art competition prior to March 15, 2006. A Federal Junior Duck Stamp Program curriculum guide to teach conservation through the arts, filled with lessons about creating field journals, observing wildlife, stamp collecting and much more, is available on the Web site.


Children’s Ag Art Show

California students in first through eighth grade are invited to participate in this agriculture art contest sponsored by the California Department of Food and Agriculture in cooperation with the California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom (CFAITC). Prizes will be given for first, second, and third places in each grade level. Winning entries will be displayed and “Best in Show” announced at Ag Day at the state capitol. Send entries to: CDFA Office of Public Affairs, Ag Art Show, 1220 N Street, Sacramento, CA 95814 with name of artist, age, grade, school, teacher’s name, contact phone number and address, and title of piece.


California Water Scholar 2006

Scholarships are available to any senior high school or junior college students interested in a career in the water industry who are entering or attending an accredited 4-year college or university in California. Each year the California Water Awareness Campaign grants two scholarship awards in the amount of $2,500 each. Applicant must be a California resident.
