Green Your School Contest

Deadline: October 9, 2009

The Student Conservation Association Green Your School Contest is a national competition to stimulate and/or identify conservation service projects designed by high school students who improve, restore, beautify, or conserve their high school environment. There will be one grand prize of $5,000 and two runner-up prizes of $2,500 each. Prizes will be awarded directly to high schools and not to individuals.

NEA Foundation Green Grants

Deadlines: October 15, 2009; February 1, 2010; June 1, 2010

With $150,000 in new grant funding designated for projects that integrate green-related topics and experiences into the classroom, the NEA Foundation is growing its Learning & Leadership and Student Achievement grants program for individuals and teams of educators.  The expansion of the grants program was made possible by unprecedented back-to-back financial commitments from Nickelodeon and the Staples Foundation for Learning.

Public school educators are eligible to apply for individual grants worth up to $5,000 for the development and implementation of ideas, techniques, and approaches for teaching “green” concepts.

Healthy Sprouts Awards

Deadline:  October 17, 2009

Research supports the connection between kids' food gardens and improved nutrition.  forward-thinking educators and parents agree that school gardens should be part of the solution to the diet and exercise related challenges children face, and they've worked hard to create youth garden programs that focus on nutrition and hunger issues.  These awards support school and youth garden programs that teach about nutrition and the issue of hunger in the United States.


PLT Greenworks! Service-Learning Program
Deadline for proposals: October 31, 2009
GreenWorks! grants engage Project Learning Tree educators and their students with their local community in "learning-by-doing" environmental projects. Student leadership, service-learning, and community participation are the cornerstones of GreenWorks! projects. These grassroots action projects enable schools and youth organizations across the country to make a positive impact on their communities. Two awards categories are available: $250 - $1,000 GreenWorks! Grants and $1,001 - $5,000 GreenWorks! Grants.

Target Field Trip Grants Program

Applications will be accepted until November 3, 2009

As part of the Target commitment to supporting education, the new Target Field Trip Grants program will award U.S. educators grants to fund a field trip for their students. Target Field Trip Grants may be used to fund trips ranging from visits to art museums and environmental projects to cultural events and civic experiences. Grants are awarded to educators, teachers, principals, para-professionals, and/or classified staff.

Whale Tail Grants Programs

Deadline: November 16, 2009

The California Coastal Commission’s WHALE TAIL® Grants Program is now accepting proposals for coastal and marine education projects.  This program funds projects encouraging people to value and take action to improve the health of California’s coast, marine life, or watersheds that connect with the coast.  Educational coastal habitat restoration and beach maintenance projects are also eligible.  Emphasis is on reaching underserved students and members of the public.

Nonprofits, schools, and government agencies may apply.  Applicants may request up to $50,000, and 25-50% of the funding will be allocated in small grants below $10,000.  A total of $352,000 will be distributed.

Sea World & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund
Deadline: December 1, 2009
Grants of up to $25,000 will be awarded to US and international nonprofits, government agencies, zoos, aquariums and higher education institutions working to conserve, protect, or rehabilitate wildlife.

Community Project Grant offered by RIESTER Foundation

Deadline: December 15, 2009

Projects must reflect the mission of RIESTER Foundation to be considered for this application.
Below are examples of projects that will be considered for funding:
  • Habitat restoration/enhancement
  • Alien species eradication
  • Nest box construction and placement
  • Public education efforts
  • Reforestation
RIESTER Foundation Community Project Grant Program will offer grants of $250-$1,000. The total amount of grants awarded to California in 2009 will be $2,500.

Captain Planet Foundation Grants

Deadlines: Dec. 31, 2009; March 31, 2010
The Captain Planet Foundation provides grants to support hands-on environmental projects.  The objective of the Foundation is to encourage innovative programs that empower children and youth around the world to work individually and collectively to solve environmental problems in their neighborhoods and communities.  Grant rewards up to $2,500 are available.

Green Thumb Challenge


Register by: December 15, 2009

From classroom bean plant experiments to outdoor compost projects, pots of pansies to large raised beds, the Green Thumb Challenge aims to motivate schools across the country to plant 10,000 indoor or outdoor gardens in 2010. The Green Education Foundation (GEF) Web site provides all of the informational resources needed to start and maintain a garden of any size, and includes standards-based lessons that link gardening to science, math, language arts, creative arts, and technology. Register by December 15, 2009, to be entered into a raffle for free garden kits and cash prizes to jump start your school or youth garden. Registration also entitles your school eligibility for a $5,000 grant!


EPA Environmental Education Grant

Deadline: Postmark by December 15, 2009

EPA seeks proposals to support environmental education projects that promote environmental stewardship and help develop knowledgeable and responsible students, teachers, and citizens. EPA issues EE grants from Headquarters as well as its Regional offices. The same educational priorities are used for both -- the EPA funding amount requested determines whether the grant is awarded from a Region or from Headquarters. Regional offices fund projects from $5,000 to $50,000. EPA Headquarters funds projects from $50,001 to $200,000. Following instructions is an important part of the application process. Read the entire notice but pay particular attention to Section 2. Complete the Application and Budget Form.
