February 2010 Deadlines: Student Opps.

EPA Our Planet, Our Stuff, Our Choice Video Competition

Deadline: February 16, 2010

The U.S. EPA is sponsoring this video competition to raise awareness of the connection between the environment and the stuff people use, consume, recycle, and throw away. Anyone 13 and older can participate with the chance to win up to $2500 for videos that will inspire community involvement, spread information, and lead to action.

Kids' Science Challenge

Deadline: February 28, 2010

The Kids' Science Challenge is a free nationwide competition for 3rd to 6th graders, made possible by the National Science Foundation.  Our website features curricula aligned to national standards, downloadable activities, videos with scientists and engineers demonstrating our activities, games and a forum for kids to ask our KSC scientists questions directly.

This year's science fields are:
Detective Science (forensics)
Bio-inspired Designs (biomimicry)
Imagining Sports on Mars (in cooperation with NASA/JPL)

Students submit ideas or problems in our science fields and if their idea is chosen, they get to visit and collaborate with the scientist to  see their idea come alive.  The first thousand students to enter the competition receive free hands-on activity kits.  These kits include simulated Mars soil, fingerprint and density experiments, and the UV sensitive beads that were featured in the December issue of "Science and Children."
